- Canoeing: There are some major rivers in the area ideal for self guided canoe trips like the Liard, Fort Nelson and Petitot Rivers. Some are day trips while others are long haul paddle routes which include over night wilderness camping.

- Kayaking & Rafting: There are some rivers in the region ideal for self guided river kayaking and rafting which include some white water rapids. Rivers include the Nahanni, Liard, Fort Nelson and Petitot Rivers.

- Hiking & Backpacking: Locally there are some self guided wilderness day hikes leading to mountain viewpoints and along river banks. Experienced backpackers can be flown into remote destinations or hike in. Backpackers must be well trained in wilderness survival skills.

- Fishing: Many rivers in the region. Popular rivers like the Petitot and Liard Rivers are good for fishing but the smaller, cleaner rivers tend to be the most popular. Fishing includes inconnu, northern pike, pickerel and whitefish. A fishing licence is required to fish in the N.W.T.

- Ice Fishing: During the winter months the lakes and rivers freeze over and ice huts are erected on the waterways for ice fishing. Ice fishing opportunities are provided by some remote resorts.

- Snowmobile: Frozen waterways, snow covered back roads and newly formed ice roads provide an amazing network of snowmobile routes leading into the deep wilderness. During the winter there is an ice road leading to Nahanni Butte.
