Things To Do near Fort Providence

Some of the more popular activities and adventures in Fort Providence, Northwest Territory, Canada in the Northern Frontier / Deh Cho Region including the village of Kakisa.

  • Heritage Walk: Walk the streets and waterfront walkway and visit with some fo the older heritage buildings in the community. Buildings like the Lady of Fort Providence Church which has been around since the late 1800s.
  • Waterfront Walkway: Boardwalk walkway path follows along the banks of the Mackenzie River. There are picnic tables and viewing benches located along the route. Good opportunity to view the river activity and the community.
  • Waterfall Sightseeing Tour: Just south of the community is the Waterfall Highway. There are various waterfall parks located along the highway with fantastic views and hiking trails. The three waterfalls in the closest proximity of the community are the Lady Evelyn, Coral and Sambaa Deh Falls.
  • Canoeing/Kayaking: The river system near the community provides many opportunities to canoe and kayak. Some of the rivers you may want to plan a self guided paddle adventure on include the Mckenzie, Hay, Trout and Kakisa Rivers.
  • Hiking: There are day hikes in the Waterfall Highway region just south of Fort Providence. There is a hiking trail connecting Lady Evelyn Falls and the Kakisa Day Use Area. Another trail links the Sambaa Deh and Coral waterfalls.
  • Fishing: The river system near the community provides many opportunities to fish for arctic grayling, lake trout, pickerel and northern pike. Some of the rivers you may want to plan a fishing adventure on include the Mckenzie, Hay, Trout and Kakisa Rivers. A fishing licence is required to fish in the NWT.
  • Wildlife Watching: Next door to the community is the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary. It is home to a large herd of free roaming buffalo. Buffalo can be viewed from the Frontier Highway. Also popular in the region are wolves, bears, falcons and sand cranes.
