Things To Do near Fort Simpson

Some of the more popular activities and adventures in Fort Simpson, Northwest Territory, Canada in the Nahanni Butte / Deh Cho Region including near the villages of Nahanni Butte, Wrigley and Checkpoint.

  • Heritage Walk: Many older buildings in the community and some historical sites. Buildings include the Albert Faille Cabin and the McPherson House. Site seeing sites include the Four Directions Monument and the Heritage Park. Walking tours available in village.
  • Canoeing/Kayaking: Self guided and guided canoe and kayak adventures are popular in the region. Many of the popular paddle routes are on the South Nahanni River in the Nahanni National Park Reserve. Tour companies provide guides, lessons, equipment, meals and sometimes accommodations. Tour companies operate from the village.
  • Rafting: Rafting adventures on the South Nahanni River are some of the more popular adventures in the region. River rafting tour companies provide transportation, guides, lessons, equipment, meals and sometimes accommodations. Tours depart from Fort Simpson.
  • Flightseeing: Floatplanes line the banks of the Mackenzie River and charter planes line the runway at the local airports. The planes in Fort Simpson provide flightseeing tours to highlight sightseeing destinations like the Ragged Range, the South Nahanni River, Flat River, Rabbitkettle Hotsprings, Virginia Falls, the Ram Plateau, Doctor Lake, Kraus Hotsprings and the Cirque of the Unclimbables.
  • Hiking/Backpacking: There are some short trails in the area. But most of the talked about hiking and backpacking adventures in and around Fort simpson are about the routes in the Nahanni National Reserve Park. There are guiding companies in the community of Fort Simpson. Planes will fly hikers and backpackers in and out.
  • Fishing: There are rivers and lakes in the region ideal for fishing for northern pike, pickerel, arctic grayling and lake trout. There are fishing guides, fishing camps and lodges located in the region. A fishing licence is required to fish in the NWT.
  • Birdwatching: The Mackenzie River and the Nahanni National Reserve Park are on the migratory path of many birds. The wetland banks of the rivers provide nesting and feeding grounds for many species of birds. Large groups of swans visit the region every spring.
