  • Aurora Borealis: Fort Smith is another northern community which enjoys the spectacle of the Northern Lights many nights of the year. There are wilderness resorts and outfitters providing Northern Light adventures in the region
  • Kayaking: The rivers in the Fort Smith region are well known paddle routes for kayaking and river rafting. The Slave River Rapids are Class 4 whitewater rapids including the Rapids of the Drowned, Pelican and Mountain Portage Rapids. There are guides and outfitters in Fort Smith.
  • Canoeing: There are lake paddles and there are long haul wilderness canoe adventures with wildlife camping and backpacking. Easy paddle on Pine Lake or wilderness paddle one of the rivers like the Peace, Slave, Athabasca, Quatre Fourches and Rivere des Rochers Rivers. There are guides and outfitters in Fort Smith.
  • Birdwatching: Fort Smith is on the migratory flight path for many of the NWT birding population. Some of the local bird sightings in the region include the sandhill crane, gyrfalcon, osprey, white pelican, golden and bald eagles and so on. The Mackenzie-Athabasca Delta is tops for birdwatching.
  • Sightseeing: Enjoy a stroll around town along the Slave River. Fishing with a walk around the village visiting with history at the local museum, the Radium King ship and the Fort Smith Mission Historic Park.
  • Backpacking: There are extreme backpacking adventures, self guided and guided. Two of the backpacking adventures in the region include the Sweetgrass Station and the Rainbow Lakes hikes in the the Wood Buffalo National Park.
  • Hiking: There are community hiking trails along the Slave River viewing kayakers, whitewater rapids and white pelicans in the summer. Longer day hikes explore the various eco systems in the Wood Buffalo National Park near the Salt River trails.
  • Snowmobiling: It is a great way to explore in the winter. After the temperatures drop the frozen lakes and rivers, gravel roads and wilderness trails become snowmobile routes taking you deep into the wilderness. Tours and trail maps are available in the community.
  • Dog Sledding: Once the lakes and rivers freeze over, the snow has fallen, temperatures have dropped it is dog sledding season.
  • Cross Country Skiing: The trails, gravel roads and frozen rivers become cross country ski routes during the winter months. The Slave River being the major route to get to and from town.
