- Aurora Borealis: Hay River is under the Northern Lights viewing shadow. Watch the skies dance in green and blue. The Aurora Borealis sightings can occur over a 240 day period. There are remote resorts, tours and guides providing Northern Light adventures on Great Slave Lake.

- Boating: Boat launches are located along the Hay River and Great Slave Lake. The community of Hay River is well known as a marine town with many boating services. There are boating tours exploring the East Arm of the Great Slave Lake.

- Birdwatching: Hay River is on the migratory flight path for many of the NWT birding population. Some of the local bird sightings in the region include the sandhill crane, gyrfalcon, osprey, raven, great blue heron, loon, golden and bald eagles.

- Fishing: Great Slave Lake (the 9th largest lake in the world) and the Hay River are good for fishing lake trout, walleye, northern pike, inconnu, whitefish and arctic grayling. Tours and guides operate in the community. Fishing licence is required to fish in the N.W.T. (pick one up in town)

- Sightseeing: Enjoy waterfront walks, Great Slave Lake, flightseeing or explore via a boat, sail, kayak or canoe tour. For some cultural sightseeing visit the Dene First Nation attractions and community museum. And then there is waterfall sightseeing on the Waterfall Highway.

- Canoeing / Kayaking: Great Slave Lake is at your doorstep for day paddles and long haul multi day adventures. Tours, guides and rentals available in Hay River. There is also a leisurely sightseeing paddle route on Hay River leading to the community of Hay River on Vale Island. Put in point at Paradise Gardens.

- Off Roading: There are hundreds of kilometres of endless gravel roads, cut lines, multi use trails and barren flat rock areas in the backcountry popular for atving, mountain biking and dirt biking.

- Snowmobiling: It is a great way to explore in the winter. After the temperatures drop the frozen lakes and rivers, gravel roads and wilderness trails become snowmobile routes taking you deep into the wilderness. Rentals, tours and trail maps are available in the community.

- Dog Sledding: Once the lakes and rivers freeze over, the snow has fallen, the days have become shorter and the temperatures have dropped the activities of winter kick into high gear. The frozen tundra now becomes a dog sledding destination. There are day trips and multi week adventures. Tours with guides operate in Hay River.

- Cross Country Skiing: Seasons change and so do activities. The local golf course becomes a cross country ski club in the winter. The fairways are transformed into 15 kilometres of nordic track maintained by the nordic club with 50% under the lights.
