Alexandra Falls

The Alexandra Falls is part of the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park. It is a day use area park located 72 kilometres (45 miles) after the Alberta/NWT Boarder crossing when entering the Northwest Territory traveling the Waterfall Highway (Hwy #1).

Alexandra Falls is the first of two large waterfalls in the Twin Gorge Falls Territorial Park. The other falls being the Louise Falls.

At the entrance of the Alexandra Falls is a large RV friendly parking lot and a day use area. The Alexandra Falls day use area includes picnic tables, fire pits, grass lawns, firewood, viewing benches, a kitchen shelter and interpretive signs. Many of the information signs detail the cultures and traditions of the Dene First Nation people and the surrounding eco system.

In the day use area is a trailhead entrance leading to a 2.2 kilometre boardwalk trail connecting to Alexandra Falls and Louise Falls. The trail explores through a boreal forest leading to a viewing platform with sitting benches overlooking the Hay River Canyon and Alexandra Falls.

From the trail there is an access route leading down to the top of the falls. The mist makes the rocks slippery so be aware. The top of the falls is flat rock with the Hay River dropping fast into a deep gorge spitting up mist high into the air. It is loud and very wet.

After Alexandra Falls the boardwalk trail continues to Louise Falls and from Louise Falls the trail continues another 2 kilometres to Escarpment Creek. If you prefer to drive to Louise Falls then after you walk to the first falls (Alexandra Falls) return to your vehicle and drive to the Louise Falls parking lot and walk from there to the waterfall.

How to Get to Alexandra Falls

Travel along the Waterfall Highway (Hwy #1 E) for 75 kilometres (45 miles) after the Alberta/NWT Border crossing. From the Waterfall Highway watch for signs pointing to the entrance of the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park and Alexandra Falls. Just up the highway another 3 kilometres is the Louise Falls parking lot.
