River Kayaking and Rafting

The Northwest Territory has a good selection of kayaking and rafting adventures. There are river routes, slow and easy, suitable for beginners... and there are fast-moving river routes with whitewater rapids for the experienced kayaker and rafting enthusiasts.

There are many Northwest Territory paddle routes for all skill levels located throughout the region. There are self guided, guided and long haul multi day kayak adventures. Kayaking with a tour group includes guides, equipment, lessons and transportation. Multi day kayak tours may include meals, accommodations and entertainment.

Self guided kayakers should be well aware of the put-in and take-out points located along the rivers to avoid rapids and waterfalls. Each paddle route will have marked and designated wilderness camping sites for overnight paddles.

There are companies in the Northwest Territory which provide rafting tours with interpretive and whitewater guides. The rafting tour companies navigate some of the most challenging rivers in the region, visit with waterfalls and explore remote canyons.

Near the communities of Fort Liard and Fort Simpson the river of choice for whitewater is the South Nahanni River in the Nahanni National Park Reserve. The entire paddle route takes 21 days, travels 517 kilometres along the South Nahanni River from Moose Ponds to the community of Fort Simpson, Northwest Territory, Canada.

Near the community of Fort Smith the Slave River is a whitewater enthusiasts dream come true. The river enjoys Class 4 whitewater rapids including the "Rapids of the Drowned", the Pelican and Mountain Portage Rapids.

Other rivers of note are the Mackenzie River, Hay River and the Cameron River. There are many, many paddle routes to explore in the Northwest Territory. Too many to list here.
