- Aurora Borealis: Yellowknife is directly under the auroral oval. It is said to be the highest point of Northern Light creativity. The Aurora Borealis sightings can occur over a 240 day period. There are remote resorts, tours and guides providing Northern Light adventures.

- Boating / Sailing: Great Slave Lake (the 9th largest lake in the world), the many lakes on the Ingraham Trail and other remote lakes provide many opportunities for boating and sailing. There are sightseeing day trips and multi day cruises exploring on Great Slave Lake.

- Fishing: The East Arm of Great Slave Lake, the lakes on Ingraham Trail are good fishing destinations for lake trout, northern pike, arctic grayling and whitefish. There are boat launches on many of the lakes. A fishing licence is required to fish in the NWT. Fishing Charters and fishing lodges operate in the area.

- Canoeing/Kayaking: Many canoe and kayak routes in the region. Best selection of paddle routes located on the Ingraham Trail. Routes like Hidden Lake, Pensive Lake, Powder Point, Tartan Rapids, the Lower Cameron River and the Upper Cameron River, Tibbit Lake Loop and the Jennejohn Wilderness Paddle Routes. There are lodges and tour companies in town.

- Hiking: There are day hikes, casual walks and remote wilderness backpacking adventures with wilderness camping in the region of Yellowknife. Many of the lakes and rivers have recreation trails with interpretive signs, viewpoints and wildlife. There are tours and guides providing long haul backpacking adventures.

- Wildlife Watching: Wildlife viewing can be enjoyed with tours and guides who provide the transportation, interpretive guide and access to the more remote wildlife viewing destinations. Wildlife viewing can also be enjoyed on self guided adventures exploring the local trails, rivers, lakes and highways.

- Dog sledding: Once the lakes and rivers freeze over, the snow has fallen, the days have become shorter and the temperatures have dropped the activities of winter kick into high gear. - Snowmobiling: Many of the back country roads, trails and frozen lakes and rivers become snowmobile routes during the winter season. Remote resorts and local tour companies provide snowmobile tours.

- Cross Country Skiing: There are 14 kilometres of classics and skate cross country ski trails in Yellowknife Yellowknife enjoys a long cross country ski season. Many of the back country roads, trails and frozen rivers are also wilderness cross country ski routes. Best to bring own equipment.
